TRX Chest Press

The suspension chest press is a bodyweight press on a suspension trainer in which you lean forward into the handles, bring your chest down between your hands and press back up. It works the chest, front of the shoulders and triceps, while your trunk holds your body in a straight line.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Adjust the straps to about mid-length. Face away from the anchor and hold a handle in each hand at chest height, palms facing down, with the straps taut.
  2. Step your feet back towards the anchor so your body leans forward in a straight line from head to heels, arms straight in front of your chest.
  3. Brace your trunk and squeeze your glutes so your hips stay in line.
  4. Bend your elbows and bring your chest down between your hands, elbows about 45° from your sides, until your hands are beside your chest.
  5. Press the handles away to straighten your arms and return to the leaning start position.
  6. Keep the handles at chest width throughout so the straps stay close to your arms.
  7. After the last rep, walk your feet forward to stand upright before letting go of the handles.

What the research says

General fitness · first choiceEndurance · first choiceMuscle growthRehab & prehabSport performanceFat loss & conditioning

  • Push-up transfer — A study found push-ups and bench press matched for muscle activity produced similar strength gains, so bodyweight pressing is a genuine strength stimulus.
  • Suspension — An EMG study found higher chest, shoulder, triceps and trunk muscle activity on a suspension trainer than in a floor push-up. Muscle activity is not the same as growth.
  • Load and reps — Research finds muscle growth is similar across a wide range of loads when sets are taken close to failure. Foot position sets the load, and sets of 8–20 reps are common.
  • Effort — Studies show sets that finish a few reps short of failure capture most of the size benefit of going to failure.
