Side Staggered Push-Up

The side staggered push-up is a push-up with one hand under the chest and the other placed out to the side, so the working arm carries most of the load. It works the chest, triceps and front shoulder on one side, and it is the first assisted step towards a one-arm push-up.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Start in a push-up position with your working hand under your chest, knuckles slightly below the shoulder.
  2. Place your assisting hand about two palms' length out to the side of your chest.
  3. Straighten your knees so your body is one line from head to heels.
  4. Descend straight down until your chest gently touches the floor, without leaning towards the assisting arm.
  5. Pause briefly, then press back up mainly through the working arm.
  6. Complete the set on your weaker arm first, then repeat on the other side.
  7. Move the assisting hand further out to make it harder, or closer in to make it easier.

Common faults

What goes wrong, and the fix

Leaning towards the assisting arm

Fix: Bring the assisting hand closer until you can move straight up and down.

Hips sagging or piking

Fix: Brace your abs and glutes so your body stays one line from head to heels.

Cutting the rep short of the floor

Fix: Descend until your chest gently touches the floor on every rep.

Working hand too far forward

Fix: Set the working hand under your chest, knuckles just below the shoulder.

What the research says

StrengthMuscle growthGeneral fitness

  • Push-up research — Studies find push-ups matched to the bench press for load or muscle activity produce similar strength and muscle gains. This rung concentrates that load on one arm.
  • Effort — Research finds muscle growth rises as sets get closer to failure, with diminishing returns, while strength gains depend less on it.
  • Sets and reps — Hampton's Hybrid Calisthenics standards run from 2 sets of 5 to 2 sets of 20 per side, weaker arm first. There is no research comparing schemes for this rung.
