Plate Pinch Carry

The plate pinch carry is a grip exercise: you pinch smooth weight plates between your thumb and fingers and walk a set distance with them hanging at your sides. It trains pinch strength and endurance in the thumb and forearm, with the upper back and trunk holding your posture as you walk.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Stand a plate, or two plates pressed together with the smooth faces outwards, on its edge beside each foot.
  2. Hinge down with a flat back and pinch each plate at its top edge, with your fingers on one side and your thumb flat on the other.
  3. Squeeze hard, stand up tall and let the plates hang at your sides with straight arms and your shoulders set.
  4. Walk the set distance with short, smooth steps, keeping the plates still and your trunk upright.
  5. Keep squeezing thumb and fingers together the whole way so the plates stay put.
  6. At the end, hinge down with a flat back and set the plates on the floor under control.

Common faults

What goes wrong, and the fix

Plates slipping mid-walk

Fix: Use chalk, pick a load you can hold for the full distance and set it down early.

Long, bouncy strides

Fix: Take short, smooth steps and keep your upper body still.

Leaning to one side

Fix: Stand tall with your shoulders level, or carry a plate in each hand.

Thumb bending back at the knuckle

Fix: Press the pad of your thumb flat into the plate and keep the thumb straight.

Shoulders slumping forward

Fix: Keep your chest up and your shoulder blades set back as you walk.

What the research says

StrengthSport performanceEndurance

  • Distance — A common approach is 3–5 carries of 20–40 metres, with a plate you can pinch the whole way without slipping. No research has compared pinch-carry distances or loads.
  • Pinch strength — A nerve-block study found the long thumb flexor supplies roughly half of pinch force while leaving whole-hand grip strength unchanged, which is why pinch is often trained separately from ordinary grip.
  • Progression — Research reviews identify mechanical tension and progressive overload as the main drivers of muscle growth. Pinch carries are usually progressed with heavier plates or longer walks.
  • Placement — Research on exercise order finds the exercises done first in a session benefit most, so grip work like this is commonly placed at the end, after the main lifts.
