Medicine Ball V-Up

The medicine ball V-up is a floor ab exercise in which you hold a medicine ball overhead, then lift your straight legs and upper body at the same time to touch the ball towards your feet. It works the abs and hip flexors, and the ball makes it harder than a bodyweight V-up.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Lie on your back with your legs straight and together. Hold a medicine ball in both hands with your arms straight overhead, just off the floor.
  2. Breathe out and brace so your low back presses towards the floor.
  3. Lift your legs and your upper body at the same time, keeping your arms and legs straight.
  4. Bring the ball towards your shins or feet so your body forms a V, balancing on your glutes.
  5. Pause briefly at the top.
  6. Unroll slowly, bringing the ball back overhead and your legs back down together.
  7. Keep the ball and your heels just off the floor between reps. After the last rep, lay the ball down behind your head.

Common faults

What goes wrong, and the fix

Swinging the ball to get up

Fix: Choose a lighter ball and lift both ends at the same speed.

Bending the knees and arms

Fix: Keep your arms and legs straight, or tuck on purpose with a lighter ball.

Dropping back to the floor

Fix: Take about two seconds to unroll.

Low back arching as the legs come down

Fix: Keep your heels a little higher until you can hold your back flat.

Ball too heavy

Fix: Use a ball you can move for every rep with straight limbs.

What the research says

Muscle growthGeneral fitnessEndurance

  • Load — Research finds muscle growth is similar across a wide range of loads when sets are hard, and lighter, higher-rep work favours muscular endurance. The ball's mass is the load to progress.
  • Volume — Research links more weekly sets for a muscle to more growth, with diminishing returns.
  • Muscle activity — EMG studies show sit-up-style exercises produce high abdominal and hip-flexor activity. There is no EMG data for the medicine ball V-up, and EMG measures activity, not growth.
  • Sequencing — Many programmes use the bodyweight V-up before adding a ball. There is no research comparing progressions.
