Medicine Ball Clean
The medicine ball clean lifts a medicine ball from the floor between your feet and catches it at your chest in a full squat, then you stand up. It works the glutes, quads and back through a long, fast range of motion and teaches the hip-driven pattern of the barbell clean.
Also called: Med Ball Clean, MB Clean · Equipment: medicine ball · Pattern: compound
Step by step
- Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and the ball on the floor between your feet.
- Squat down with a flat back and place your palms on the sides of the ball, fingers pointing down, arms straight.
- Lift the ball by driving through your feet and opening your hips, keeping your arms straight and your back flat.
- As your hips reach full extension, shrug your shoulders so the ball keeps rising close to your body.
- Pull yourself down under the ball, turning your hands around its sides so they end up underneath it.
- Catch the ball at your chest in the bottom of a full squat, elbows forward and chest up.
- Stand up to full extension with the ball at your chest, then return it to the floor between your feet.
- Flat back, arms straight off the floor
- Hips open first, then shrug
- Pull yourself under the ball
- Turn your hands around the ball
- Elbows forward, chest up in the squat

What the research says
Fat loss & conditioning · first choiceGeneral fitnessEndurance
- Load and power — Reviews of weightlifting derivatives describe them as loaded barbell tools for training rapid hip and knee extension. There is no research on medicine-ball cleans themselves, which are commonly used to teach the pattern and for conditioning.
- Muscle growth — Research reviews identify mechanical tension as the main driver of muscle growth. Light medicine-ball cleans are commonly used for skill and conditioning rather than for size.
- Sets and reps — There is no controlled research on medicine-ball clean dosing. A common approach is low-rep practice sets when learning, and higher-rep sets inside circuits for conditioning.
