Leg Extension
The leg extension is a seated machine exercise in which you straighten your knees against a padded lever resting just above your ankles. It isolates the quadriceps at the front of the thigh and is one of the most common ways to add extra quad work alongside squats and leg presses.
Also called: Machine Leg Extension, Quad Extension, Machine Quad Extension, Leg Extension (Machine) · Equipment: machine · Pattern: squat
Step by step
- Adjust the backrest so the side of your knee lines up with the machine's pivot point, and set the shin pad just above your ankles.
- Sit back with your thighs flat on the seat and hold the side handles to keep your hips down.
- Brace lightly and straighten your knees smoothly until your legs are almost straight.
- Pause for a moment at the top with your quads squeezed.
- Bring the weight back under control until your knees are bent to about 90°, keeping the plates from resting on the stack between reps.
- Keep your hips on the seat and your back against the pad for every rep.
- Knees lined up with the pivot
- Push the pad up with your shins
- Squeeze your quads at the top
- Control the weight on the way back
- Hips pinned to the seat

What it trains
| Muscle | Role | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Quadriceps: vastus lateralis | Prime mover | A |
| Quadriceps: vastus medialis | Prime mover | A |
| Quadriceps: vastus intermedius | Prime mover | B |
| Quadriceps: rectus femoris | Secondary | A |

What goes wrong, and the fix
Swinging the hips to lift the weight
Fix: Hold the handles, keep your hips on the seat and slow the lift.
Letting the weight drop
Fix: Take about two seconds to bring the weight back each rep.
Knees out of line with the pivot
Fix: Adjust the backrest until the side of your knee lines up with the pivot.
Shin pad set too high
Fix: Set the pad just above your ankles before your first set.
Cutting the range short
Fix: Straighten your knees almost fully and return to about 90° each rep.
What the research says
Muscle growthRehab & prehabGeneral fitnessEndurance
- Hip angle — A 10-week study found leg extensions done with the backrest reclined, so the hips were more open, built more rectus femoris size than sitting upright, with no difference in the outer quad.
- Range of motion — A study of leg extensions found partial reps in the bent-knee half of the range built as much quad size as full reps, and more than partials near straight legs.
- Effort — Studies show sets that finish a few reps short of failure capture most of the growth benefit, and true failure adds only a small extra return.
- Volume and frequency — Research links more weekly sets for a muscle to more growth, with diminishing returns. Training a muscle about twice a week is a common way to spread that volume.
- Transfer — A 6-week study found squats improved squat strength and jump height more than leg extensions did, so many lifters use the leg extension alongside compound leg exercises rather than in place of them.
