Hamstring Lunge Stretch

A hamstring stretch taken from a half-kneeling lunge with the front leg extended and the hips pushed back, rather than from standing. Working it in a lunge lets the hips travel back and the trunk fold towards the thigh, which reaches the hamstring without loading a rounded lower back.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Kneel on one knee and extend the other leg in front of you with the heel on the floor.
  2. Push your feet forward and stick your backside out — hinge at the hips rather than rounding the back.
  3. Keep the extended leg's knee soft to begin with; it can straighten as the position opens up.
  4. Move your stomach towards your thigh rather than reaching for the toes with your hands.
  5. Breathe normally and hold, then come up under control and repeat on the other side.
  6. Put something under the down knee if the floor is uncomfortable.
