Cable Shrug

The cable shrug lifts your shoulders straight up towards your ears against a bar on a low pulley. It works the upper trapezius and levator scapulae, and the cable keeps tension on them throughout the short movement.

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Attach a straight bar to a low pulley. Stand facing the machine, close enough that the cable runs almost straight up and down.
  2. Hold the bar with an overhand grip, hands just outside your thighs and arms straight.
  3. Stand tall with your trunk braced, your neck neutral and your chin level.
  4. Shrug your shoulders straight up towards your ears as high as they will go, keeping your arms straight.
  5. Hold the top for a moment, squeezing your traps.
  6. Let your shoulders sink back down under control until your traps are fully stretched.
  7. After the last rep, return the bar to the stack with control.

Common faults

What goes wrong, and the fix

Rolling the shoulders

Fix: Shrug straight up and let the shoulders come straight back down.

Bending the elbows

Fix: Keep your arms straight and let only your shoulders move.

Jutting the head forward

Fix: Keep your chin level and your head stacked over your shoulders.

Cutting the range short

Fix: Let your shoulders sink fully at the bottom and rise fully at the top.

Leaning back

Fix: Stand tall and brace so only your shoulders move.

What the research says

Muscle growth · first choiceRehab & prehab · first choiceGeneral fitnessEndurance

  • Muscle activity — An EMG study of 10 scapular exercises found the shoulder shrug produced the highest upper-trapezius activity. EMG measures activity, not growth.
  • Arm position — A shrug study found that starting with the arms about 30° out to the side produced more activity in both the top and bottom fibres of the trapezius than shrugging with the arms by the sides.
  • Rep ranges and effort — Research finds muscle growth is similar across a wide range of loads when sets are taken close to failure, with a flattening return as sets approach failure.
  • Volume — Research links more weekly sets for a muscle to more growth, with diminishing returns. Heavy pulls and loaded carries also work the upper traps.
