Banded Glute Bridge

The banded glute bridge is a glute bridge done with a mini-band just above your knees, pressing your knees out against it as you lift your hips. It works the glutes through hip extension and adds work for the side hip muscles (gluteus medius and minimus) that push the knees apart.

Also called: Resistance Band Glute Bridge, Banded Bridge Abduction, Bridge with Knee Press-Out, Glute Bridge Abduction Pulse · Equipment: band · Pattern: hinge

How to do it

Step by step

  1. Place a mini-band just above your knees. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat and hip-width apart, and heels about a foot from your glutes.
  2. Press your knees out so the band is taut, and rest your arms by your sides.
  3. Brace your trunk, draw your ribs down and tuck your pelvis slightly.
  4. Drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes to lift your hips until your shoulders, hips and knees form a straight line. Keep your knees pressed out.
  5. Hold the top for one to two seconds. You can add a few small press-outs of the knees against the band here.
  6. Bring your hips back down to the floor under control, keeping the band taut.
  7. Repeat for your reps without letting your knees fall inwards.
Coaching cues

Common faults

What goes wrong, and the fix

Knees falling inwards

Fix: Press your knees out against the band for the whole set.

Arching the low back at the top

Fix: Keep your ribs down and finish with a glute squeeze, not a higher arch.

Pushing through the toes

Fix: Keep your heels down and drive through them.

Feet too far away

Fix: Move your heels closer so your shins are near vertical at the top.

Rushing the reps

Fix: Pause at the top for one to two seconds on every rep.

What the research says

Rehab & prehab · first choiceGeneral fitness · first choiceEndurance · first choiceMuscle growthSport performance

  • Muscle activity — A review of glute EMG studies found exercises that push the knees out or rotate the hip outwards produce high activity in the gluteus medius and upper glutes. An EMG study also found a bridge with a band among the exercises that work the glutes most relative to the front of the hip. These measured activity, not growth.
  • Glute growth — A 2025 meta-analysis found many exercises grow the glutes, including hip thrusts and squats. Banded bridges have not been studied directly.
  • Effort with light loads — Research finds light loads build muscle similar to heavy loads when sets are taken close to failure, and that with light loads, how close to failure the set goes matters more.
  • Progression — There is no research on progressing this exercise. A common approach is a thicker band, a longer hold at the top, single-leg bridges or a weight across the hips.
